SIAI’s 23 July briefing explained how Ranking News defines markets, constructs candidate universes, evaluates evidence and publishes connected category rankings. The session showed how verified submissions and industry review can lead to controlled data updates or structural revisions, including recent yacht and investment-migration category splits. The complete video recording, presentation materials and accompanying SIAI Research paper are available below.

On 23 July 2026, the Swiss Institute of Artificial Intelligence (SIAI) held an online methodology briefing for firms nominated or recognized across Ranking News and its specialist publications. Professor Keith Lee of SIAI presented the ranking methodology developed jointly with The Economy Network and applied through Ranking News.
The session was designed for corporate communications, marketing, strategy and leadership teams seeking a clearer account of how specialist markets are defined, how firms are identified and compared, how evidence is processed, and how published rankings are maintained when new information becomes available.
The briefing did not discuss confidential source data, proprietary scoring details or the individual assessment of any nominated firm. Instead, it addressed the institutional and methodological principles that apply across the Ranking News network.

Why one universal ranking is often inadequate
The briefing began with the structural limitation of a universal league table. A broad industry may contain organizations that share an institutional label but perform different economic functions.
Commercial banks, investment banks, insurers, asset managers and private-capital firms, for example, are all financial institutions. Yet total assets, underwriting capacity, advisory expertise, externally managed capital and transaction execution do not have the same meaning across those business models. A universal score may therefore reward whichever operating model is most closely aligned with the dominant indicator.
Ranking News instead uses a connected, multi-output approach. One evidence base can support several related category rankings, while the relevance and weight of an indicator can vary across outputs. This structure allows:
- related markets to retain shared capabilities without being treated as identical;
- category-specific evidence to influence only the markets to which it is relevant;
- specialist firms to be evaluated without being overwhelmed by irrelevant measures of corporate scale; and
- diversified firms to appear in more than one ranking when they demonstrate material activity in several connected markets.
Cross-category inclusion is therefore not treated as duplication. It reflects the reality that a company may possess substantiated capabilities in more than one part of an interwoven industry.
A ranking begins by defining the market
Before firms can be compared, the eligible market must be defined. The briefing identified several questions that precede statistical estimation:
- What commercial or professional activity defines the category?
- What geographic scope and publication period apply?
- Should a group, subsidiary or operating brand be evaluated as the relevant entity?
- What evidence demonstrates material participation in the market?
- Are regulatory authorization, government sponsorship or official program relationships conditions of eligibility?
This distinction is important because being outside a category’s eligible universe is not the same as receiving a low score within that category. A firm may be credible and successful while performing a role that belongs to a different market.
Evidence hierarchy outranks publicity volume
Ranking News draws on multiple source families rather than treating all public references as equivalent. These include:
- authoritative official sources, such as government registers, regulatory authorizations, public filings and audited reports;
- verifiable operational evidence, including disclosed projects, mandates, professional teams, offices, partnerships and transaction experience;
- trusted research and editorial sources, including industry associations, specialist databases, established business publications and relevant research and reporting from The Economy; and
- firm submissions and wider open-source discovery, which can reveal information that must then be independently verified.
The Economy is one of the ecosystem’s principal trusted research and editorial sources, particularly for market discovery, cross-sector context and continuing industry developments. It is not an exclusive source, and no single media article independently determines a ranking result.
The briefing also emphasized that publicity volume is not the same as capability. The same corporate announcement may be reproduced across many websites, while parent companies, subsidiaries and brands can be confused across jurisdictions. Raw information must therefore be resolved to the correct entity, dated, checked for duplication, mapped to relevant categories and assigned an appropriate verification status before it becomes usable ranking evidence.
The model estimates; experts define and interpret the market
The ranking model processes evidence consistently, estimates shared and category-specific relationships, supports repeatable recalculation and can reveal when an existing category contains insufficiently separated activities.
Industry and methodological review remains necessary to define candidate universes, interpret latent capabilities, distinguish structural non-applicability from missing information, and determine whether a market should be divided, merged or renamed.
The proper role of expert review is structural. It should improve the market definition or model architecture when evidence justifies a change. It should not move individual firms until a list appears intuitively attractive.
Continuous review with controlled publication
Ranking News continuously reviews evidence, but material publication changes follow a controlled and documented process. The briefing distinguished three forms of update:
| Update | Typical issue | Methodological response |
|---|---|---|
| Factual correction | An incorrect authorization, entity, office, ownership or transaction record | Correct the evidence and reassess affected outputs |
| Evidence expansion | Previously unavailable data or newly verified activity | Add the evidence and rerun the relevant model |
| Taxonomy revision | Evidence shows that one category contains distinct markets | Split, merge, rename or redesign the category structure |
A submission or rebuttal can initiate a review, but it does not determine the result. The relevant claim must be identified, its evidence verified, its scope assessed, and the affected parts of the ranking network recalculated. Where a broader market-definition issue is raised, external and institutional evidence must support any structural revision.
From one yacht category to two connected rankings
The Luxury Yacht Builders and Superyacht Builders rankings illustrate a recent taxonomy revision.
The initial model output contained a mixed group because the two markets share marine engineering, construction, design, production and luxury-client capabilities. Several firms also participate in both sub-sectors.
Further market review nevertheless showed that vessel scale, bespoke project complexity, engineering demands, customer structure and production economics support two distinguishable evaluations. Ranking News therefore introduced two connected outputs:
The common industrial foundation remains part of the architecture, and a builder may appear in both rankings when the evidence supports material capability in both markets. The revision did not create separation by arbitrarily changing final weights. It represented the market distinction at the category level.
When one mobility label concealed three markets
The former Residency and Global Mobility Advisory category provided a second example. A firm submission initiated a wider review of the market, but the resulting decision was based on broader evidence rather than the submitting firm’s preferred outcome.
The review found that general client advisory, formal authorization within defined government programs, and program-side institutional advisory roles do not necessarily constitute the same competitive market. Ranking News consequently reorganized the field into:
- Investment Migration Advisory Firms;
- Authorized Investment Migration Firms; and
- Investment Migration Program Advisors.
Government authorization and formal program relationships can be market-defining conditions rather than interchangeable performance indicators. Firms may appear in more than one of the three categories where their verified activities genuinely span those roles.
Why Ranking News publishes tiers
The underlying model can produce continuous estimates, but publication should not imply that every adjacent position represents a decisive difference.
Ranking News therefore commonly presents recognized firms in institutionally calibrated tiers. The tier sizes are publication formats informed by accumulated observations across category rankings, not universal mathematical constants. They can be adapted to the size, maturity and evidence density of a particular market.
Tiering communicates meaningful performance groups while acknowledging limited precision around closely estimated firms. It is an expression of methodological restraint: the published format should not claim a sharper distinction than the available evidence can support.
Editorial recognition and licensing remain separate
The briefing concluded by distinguishing ranking methodology from recognition licensing.
Ranking methodology determines candidate eligibility, category placement, tier, position and continued editorial inclusion. Recognition licensing governs how an independently determined result may be used and distributed through badges, communications materials, visibility services and optional exposure across The Economy Network.
No license is required for editorial inclusion, and purchasing a license does not alter the evidence, category definition, weights, tier or position. Factual review and correction procedures remain available to licensed and unlicensed firms alike.
In short, the ranking determines who is recognized; the license determines how far that recognition may be communicated.
Read the accompanying research paper
The mathematical rationale behind the briefing is developed in the SIAI Research paper:
- Research paper: Beyond the Universal League Table: A Structured Multi-Factor Framework for Industry Rankings
The paper provides a deeper discussion of the many-input, multi-output ranking architecture; shared and category-specific latent capabilities; multiple appearances across connected rankings; tiered publication; layerwise estimation; model comparison; expert interpretation; controlled recalibration; and the limitations of ranking as a measurement system.
The research paper is a conceptual and practice-oriented explanation rather than a disclosure of proprietary scoring details, confidential data or the complete production specification for any individual Ranking News publication.
A living methodology, governed by evidence
The principal message of the briefing was that a defensible ranking system is neither one universal formula nor a collection of unrelated lists. It is a connected measurement architecture that preserves shared capabilities while recognizing that excellence takes different forms across specialist markets.
Markets must be defined before firms are compared. Evidence must be traceable, verified and relevant to the category. Credible new information may improve a factual record, expand the evidence base or reveal that the taxonomy itself requires revision. Mathematical modelling disciplines how evidence is connected; industry expertise determines whether those connections describe a real market.
That combination of structure, review and institutional restraint is the basis on which Ranking News will continue to maintain and develop its specialist rankings.
